WHEN THE PIECES REVEAL WHO WE ARE

The Quiet Magic of Living Authentically

By Edwin Gil | October 1, 2026

Sometimes the most beautiful discovery is not finding someone new within ourselves, but finally allowing ourselves to be who we have always been.

BEYOND THE PIECES

On September 14, I wrote a reflection titled When the Pieces Begin to Make Sense.

I was beginning to recognize how experiences that once seemed disconnected were finding their place within a larger composition.

Conversations. Relationships. Mistakes. Unexpected opportunities. Difficult moments. Years of writing. Years of creating.

Little by little, those pieces were beginning to reveal something meaningful.

But over these past two weeks, as I have continued creating The Heart Series, something else has been happening.

The pieces have not stopped moving.

They have continued connecting, opening new questions, and inviting me to look deeper within myself.

And somewhere in this process, I have begun to recognize something that feels even more important than understanding where the pieces belong.

Understanding who I am when I no longer feel the need to arrange those pieces for someone else's approval.

Perhaps that is where authenticity begins.

THE MASKS WE LEARN TO WEAR

I have been thinking about the masks we wear throughout our lives.

Not necessarily because we want to deceive anyone.

Sometimes we wear them because we want to belong.

Because we want to be accepted.

Because we are afraid of disappointing someone.

Because somewhere along the way, we learned that being loved, respected, or valued required us to become a particular version of ourselves.

We learn to be strong when we feel vulnerable.

To smile when we are uncertain.

To appear successful when life feels complicated.

To hide the parts of ourselves we imagine others might not understand.

And slowly, without even noticing, we can begin confusing the person we present to the world with the person we truly are.

I recognize that I have worn some of those masks, too.

I have wanted to be understood.

I have wanted my work to be recognized.

I have wanted to prove that my dreams, my decisions, and my journey had meaning.

And there is nothing inherently wrong with wanting recognition or connection.

But I am beginning to understand the difference between sharing who I am and feeling that I must constantly prove who I am.

One comes from freedom.

The other can become an exhausting performance.

And I no longer want my life to feel like a performance.

WHAT THE HEART HAS BEEN TEACHING ME

When I began developing The Heart Series, I imagined five territories through which we could explore the human experience.

Roots. Voice. Identity. Healing. Belonging.

At first, I approached them as artistic concepts.

Places to explore through paintings, installations, words, objects, and shared experiences.

But as the work has grown, I have discovered that these territories are not only subjects I am creating.

They are places I am visiting within myself.

Roots has invited me to look at where I come from, the memories I carry, and the experiences that shaped me.

Voice has reminded me of the importance of expressing what I feel, even when I cannot find the perfect words.

Identity has opened questions about culture, individuality, and the many colors and experiences that make each of us unique.

Healing has encouraged me to acknowledge the wounds I carry without allowing them to define my entire story.

And Belonging has brought me to a particularly meaningful realization.

Perhaps belonging does not begin when others accept us.

Perhaps it begins when we stop rejecting parts of ourselves.

I did not anticipate how personal this journey would become.

I thought I was creating an exhibition about the heart.

And in many ways, I was.

But the process has also become an invitation to discover my own.

EMBRACING THE ENTIRE COMPOSITION

In my previous reflection, I wrote about how art taught me to recognize beauty in imperfection.

A crack.

An unexpected mark.

A layer that changes the composition.

A detail that was never part of the original plan.

I have been thinking about that idea differently these past two weeks.

What if the parts of ourselves we try hardest to hide are not necessarily the parts that need to disappear?

What if they are simply asking to be understood?

I am learning to look at Edwin with greater compassion.

Not the Edwin I thought I was supposed to become.

Not the Edwin who always has the right answer, makes the right decision, or knows exactly what comes next.

But the person I am today.

With my accomplishments and my mistakes.

My confidence and my fears.

My dreams and my uncertainties.

My beautiful memories and the chapters I would not choose to repeat.

I am learning that embracing myself does not mean excusing every mistake or refusing to grow.

It means I can take responsibility for my life without turning my imperfections into reasons to reject myself.

I can change without denying my past.

I can grow without pretending I was never lost.

I can be grateful without pretending everything is easy.

And I can continue becoming without believing that the person I am today is somehow insufficient.

Maybe authenticity is not about becoming a perfect version of ourselves.

Maybe it is about developing the courage to live as our whole, imperfect selves.

THE QUIET MAGIC OF AUTHENTICITY

Recently, I asked myself a question:

When have I felt truly happy, and why?

Not simply excited by an accomplishment.

Not temporarily relieved because something worked out.

Not happy because someone recognized my work or approved of a decision.

But genuinely at peace.

As I explored that question, I began noticing something.

Some of my most meaningful moments have been the simplest ones.

Moments when I was creating without worrying about the outcome.

When I was laughing without thinking about how I appeared.

When I was enjoying someone's company without trying to control what the connection might become.

When I was fully present, without comparing my life to someone else's expectations.

In those moments, I was not trying to demonstrate anything.

I was simply being.

And perhaps that is the magic I have been searching for.

Not a mysterious force that suddenly makes life perfect.

But the quiet freedom that appears when we stop spending so much energy trying to become acceptable to everyone else.

Authenticity does not eliminate fear.

It does not guarantee that everyone will understand us.

It does not remove uncertainty or protect us from disappointment.

But it can create space for something deeply valuable.

Peace with ourselves.

And that peace allows us to experience life more fully, rather than constantly watching ourselves live it.

WHEN ART BECOMES A MIRROR

As November approaches and The Heart Series continues taking shape, I find myself looking at this work with a different perspective.

I still see the paintings.

The floating trees.

The words carried on shirts.

The anatomical hearts filled with color and identity.

The plants that speak about healing.

The ceramic hearts that invite us to gather around a shared table.

I see the five territories becoming an experience that others will soon be able to explore.

But I also see something less visible.

I see the conversations that changed me.

The questions that challenged me.

The moments of doubt.

The unexpected connections.

The joy of creating something without knowing exactly where it would lead.

And I see a person who has been learning to embrace himself along the way.

This is what makes the series so meaningful to me.

It has not simply given me an opportunity to express what I believe about the human heart.

It has given me an opportunity to question, rediscover, and sometimes reconsider what I believe about myself.

I am still learning.

Still making mistakes.

Still discovering new layers.

And I hope that never stops.

Because perhaps the greatest gift of this creative journey is not that I have finally found all the answers.

It is that I am becoming more comfortable living without needing to have them all.

AN INVITATION TO BE YOURSELF

As I close this reflection, I want to invite you to consider something.

What parts of yourself have you been hiding because you were afraid they might not be accepted?

What expectations are you still carrying that no longer belong to the person you are becoming?

And what might change if, just for a moment, you allowed yourself to exist without needing to explain, justify, or prove your worth?

I know this is not always easy.

We all have different histories, responsibilities, circumstances, and ways of finding our path.

Authenticity will look different for each of us.

And living authentically does not mean saying everything we think, abandoning our responsibilities, or disregarding the people we love.

It means learning to make room for our truth while remaining compassionate toward ourselves and others.

Maybe we do not have to remove every mask in a single moment.

Maybe we begin by recognizing when we are wearing one.

By being a little more honest.

By listening to what we truly feel.

By giving ourselves permission to be imperfect.

And by discovering that we can belong to this world without abandoning ourselves to do so.

Two weeks ago, I was beginning to see how the pieces of my journey fit together.

Today, I am discovering something else.

The beauty of the composition was never dependent on hiding its imperfections.

Perhaps that is true of us, too.

And if there is one thought I want to carry into this next chapter of The Heart Series, it is this:

I don't have to prove who I am. I can enjoy being myself.

The heart is a territory to discover.

And perhaps one of its most beautiful discoveries is the freedom to be ourselves.

From my heart to yours,

Conversaciones. Relaciones. Errores. Oportunidades inesperadas. Momentos difíciles. Años escribiendo. Años creando.

Poco a poco, aquellas piezas comenzaban a revelar algo significativo.

He querido ser comprendido.

He querido que mi trabajo sea reconocido.

He querido demostrar que mis sueños, mis decisiones y mi recorrido tienen sentido.

¿Cuándo me he sentido verdaderamente feliz y por qué?

Mientras exploraba esa pregunta, comencé a notar algo.

Edwin Gil
