WHEN THE PIECES BEGIN TO MAKE SENSE

By Edwin Gil

The Spanish version of this reflection can be found at the end of this page.

Learning to Trust the Process

Sometimes life gives us the pieces long before it shows us the picture.

There are moments when life does not give us answers.

It gives us pieces.

A conversation. A difficult season. A sentence written late at night. A person who arrives. Someone who leaves. A mistake. An unexpected opportunity. A door that closes. Another one we never knew existed.

And while we are living through each of those moments, we rarely understand how they belong together.

We simply keep walking.

In my last reflection, When the Horizon Leads Us Back to the Heart, I wrote about following that horizon and discovering that so many of the roads I had traveled were somehow leading me back to the same place: the heart.

This week, I have been thinking about what happens when we stop looking so far toward the horizon and begin to look at the road behind us.

Suddenly, some of those pieces begin to connect.

And lately, I have been experiencing something beautiful:

I am beginning to see the shape of the journey.

WHEN THE PIECES BEGIN TO CONNECT

For almost four years, I have been writing.

Sometimes intentionally. Sometimes because I simply needed somewhere to place what I was feeling.

I wrote about love, fear, identity, healing, relationships, disappointment, hope, starting again, and belonging.

I wrote questions when I didn't have answers, and I shared quotes when a few words seemed capable of expressing something much larger.

At the time, I didn't know exactly where all of it was going.

I was simply documenting what I was experiencing and learning.

But now something beautiful is happening.

Those words have become The Territory of Voice.

The reflections I have shared through The Heart Journey have become part of The Heart Series.

The conversations I have had with people are finding their way into the work.

Experiences I once thought were separate are beginning to speak to one another.

What once looked like individual pieces of my life is slowly revealing itself as one larger composition.

Perhaps that is one of the gifts of time:

We understand the pieces differently once we can see more of the picture.

EMBRACING THE PROCESS

For a long time, I think I believed that trusting the process meant believing everything would eventually become easier.

I don't believe that anymore.

Life is not always easy.

There are difficult days. There are disappointments, uncertainty, worries, relationships we don't completely understand, plans that change, people who surprise us, and moments when the future feels anything but clear.

The difference is that I am learning not to see those moments as interruptions to the journey.

They are the journey.

That realization has changed something in me.

Instead of constantly asking, Why is this happening to me?, I am learning to ask:

What is this moment asking me to understand?

That doesn't make pain disappear.

It doesn't make disappointment pleasant.

It simply gives those experiences another place in the story.

Perhaps embracing the process is exactly that.

Not pretending everything is beautiful.

Not forcing ourselves to be positive.

Not showing the world only the polished parts of our lives.

But learning to hold all of it.

The joy and the uncertainty.

The accomplishment and the mistake.

The beautiful and the uncomfortable.

The things we understand and the things we are still learning to accept.

THE BEAUTY OF IMPERFECTION

Art taught me this long before I understood how to apply it to my own life.

I have never believed that the most interesting artwork is the most perfect one.

A mark can change a composition.

A crack can become part of the story.

A layer underneath another layer can give the surface its depth.

Something unexpected can become the very thing that gives a piece its character.

So why should we expect something different from ourselves?

Perhaps our imperfections are not things we need to erase.

Perhaps they are layers.

Evidence.

Texture.

Part of the composition.

I am learning to embrace my own imperfections.

I am learning to embrace Edwin—not an idealized version of him, not the version who has everything figured out, but the person I am today.

With my history.

My contradictions.

My mistakes.

My dreams.

My scars.

My questions.

And my continued desire to become.

I am also learning to stop seeing myself as the victim of every difficult chapter and instead recognize that I still have the ability to decide what I create from it.

That may be one of the most important lessons this journey has given me:

Perfection is not the goal. Becoming is.

In every flaw, a rhythm.
In every mistake, beauty.

Just like art.

Just like us.

WHEN THE WORK BECOMES THE JOURNEY

And perhaps this is why this particular moment feels so meaningful.

Tomorrow, another piece of this journey enters the world with the first presentation of The Heart of Our Heritage at Dos Caminos.

What began as an exploration of identity has become a collection honoring artists, cultures, histories, and legacies we continue to carry within us.

After that, the journey continues at CPCC, bringing the work into another space and another community.

And suddenly I can look around and realize something that makes me incredibly happy:

Two territories are no longer simply ideas in my studio.

The Territory of Identity is alive.

The Territory of Voice is alive.

They are being seen.

Worn.

Discussed.

Photographed.

Shared.

Experienced.

And most importantly, they are beginning to belong to people beyond me.

There is something incredibly moving about watching words I began writing years ago now being worn by other people as part of The Territory of Voice.

A private reflection becomes a sentence.

A sentence becomes a shirt.

A shirt becomes a voice.

And that voice begins another conversation.

That is when I am reminded that perhaps our stories are never entirely ours.

Sometimes we share something from our own journey and another person discovers a small piece of theirs within it.

GRATITUDE IS PART OF THE TERRITORY

Right now, I feel happy.

I feel proud of this work.

I feel satisfied with what is beginning to take shape.

And I feel deeply grateful.

Not because everything in my life is perfect.

It isn't.

There are still difficult moments. There are still questions without answers. There are still things I am working through and parts of myself I am continuing to discover.

But I am learning that happiness does not require perfection.

I can be grateful for what is growing while acknowledging what is difficult.

I can celebrate what is happening without pretending there aren't things I am still trying to understand.

I can love my life while continuing to work on it.

Perhaps that is another kind of healing.

Today, when I look at The Heart Series, I don't only see paintings, installations, shirts, words, events, or exhibitions.

I see time.

I see conversations.

I see mistakes.

I see people.

I see thousands of small decisions.

I see nights when I didn't know what I was doing next.

I see almost four years of words that somehow found their way onto shirts and became Voice.

I see questions that became artworks.

I see experiences that became territories.

And I see a journey that is still unfolding.

THE HORIZON IS STILL MOVING

There is still so much ahead.

Roots. Voice. Identity. Healing. Belonging.

Five territories.

Five ways of exploring what we carry within us.

And there are moments coming that I am incredibly excited to share—including a very special surprise for November 14 that makes me smile every time I think about it.

But I am learning not to rush toward what comes next.

For once, I want to stand here for a moment and appreciate what is already happening.

Tomorrow matters.

CPCC matters.

November matters.

The exhibition matters.

But so does today.

So does this imperfect moment between where I started and wherever this journey is taking me.

Because perhaps the horizon was never asking us to arrive.

Perhaps it was simply giving us a direction.

And somewhere along the way, when we learn to embrace the difficult roads as much as we embrace the beautiful ones, we begin to understand:

The process was never standing between us and the destination.

The process was part of the destination all along.

A REFLECTION FOR YOU

Look back at something in your life that once felt difficult, confusing, or completely disconnected from where you thought you were going.

Can you see it differently today?

Can you recognize something it taught you, changed in you, or prepared you for?

And what would happen if, instead of waiting for your life to become perfect before you celebrate it, you allowed yourself to embrace the life that exists right now?

The beautiful parts.

The difficult parts.

The unfinished parts.

All of it.

Because maybe becoming isn't about finally arriving at the perfect version of ourselves.

Maybe becoming is learning to love the entire process of getting there.

Tomorrow, another chapter begins.

And I am grateful to every person who has participated, shared a message, worn a quote, opened a door, sent me a note, collected a piece, or simply continued following this journey.

There is much more coming.

For now, thank you for walking with me.

Thank you for allowing my words into your life.

Thank you for allowing my art to become part of your own reflections.

And thank you for reminding me that sometimes the things we create while trying to understand ourselves become the very things that connect us to one another.

The heart is a territory to discover.

And I am still discovering it.

From my heart to yours,

Durante casi cuatro años he estado escribiendo.

A veces intencionalmente.

Evidencia.

Textura.

Parte de la composición.

Estoy aprendiendo a abrazar mis propias imperfecciones.

Estoy aprendiendo a abrazar a Edwin.

The Territory of Identity está vivo.

The Territory of Voice está vivo.

Están siendo vistos.

Vestidos.

Conversados.

Fotografiados.

Compartidos.

Experimentados.

Hoy, cuando miro The Heart Series, no veo solamente pinturas, instalaciones, camisetas, palabras, eventos o exhibiciones.

Veo tiempo.

Veo conversaciones.

Veo errores.

Veo personas.
