WHEN THE HORIZON LEADS US BACK TO THE HEART
By Edwin Gil
The Spanish version of this reflection can be found at the end of this page.
There are journeys that take us toward new places. And there are others that, without us realizing it, are slowly leading us back to ourselves.
In my last reflection, When the Heart Trusts the Horizon, I wrote about those moments when we continue walking without knowing exactly where the road is taking us.
About uncertainty.
About the small signs that appear along the way.
About learning to trust the horizon, even when we cannot yet see what waits beyond it.
I have been thinking about that a great deal this week.
Because perhaps trusting the horizon does not always mean discovering a new destination. Sometimes, after walking long enough, we realize that the horizon has quietly been leading us home.
And lately, I have begun to wonder if that is what has been happening to me.
THE ARTIST I USED TO BE
For most of my career, my art looked outward.
I wanted to understand people.
Community.
Immigration.
Identity.
Belonging.
I created projects that depended on participation because I believed and still believe that art has an extraordinary ability to bring people together.
Thousands of hands became part of flags.
Strangers left their marks beside one another.
Stories from different countries, cultures, languages, and experiences occupied the same space.
The artwork was never completely mine.
That was the point.
I wanted art to become a meeting place: a space where people could see one another, recognize one another, and perhaps understand that none of us exists entirely alone.
Maybe some of that came from my own experience of arriving in a new country and trying to understand where I belonged.
Perhaps I was building community because, somewhere inside myself, I was also trying to build a home.
For years, I used art to ask the world:
How can we see each other differently?
How can we recognize ourselves in one another?
How can art remind us that we belong to something larger than ourselves?
Those questions shaped me.
They still do.
But somewhere along the way, another question began to appear.
Much quieter.
Much more personal.
What happens when the person I need to understand is myself?
WHEN THE WORK BEGAN TO TURN INWARD
I cannot point to the exact moment when it happened.
Transitions rarely announce themselves. They enter our lives quietly.
A color begins appearing more often.
A symbol refuses to leave.
A question follows us from one painting to another.
A line becomes a scar. A scar becomes a memory. A memory becomes a story asking to be seen.
And suddenly, we realize that what seemed like separate pieces were actually trying to tell us the same story.
For me, that recurring symbol became the human heart.
At first, I thought I was simply painting hearts.
Today, I understand that I was entering a territory.
The anatomical heart became a place where I could speak about memory, gratitude, loss, identity, resilience, love, fear, roots, and everything we carry without always knowing how to name it.
It allowed me to look at our scars not only as evidence of what wounded us, but also as lines marking the places where life repaired, transformed, and continued.
The work became more intimate.
And so did the questions.
Instead of asking only how we connect with one another, I began asking:
What do we carry inside us?
What have our scars taught us?
What parts of ourselves have we hidden?
What continues growing beneath the surface?
What remains when the noise around us becomes quiet?
Maybe this is why the heart keeps returning to my work.
Because the more I explore it, the less it feels like a symbol.
It feels like a map.
THE MESSAGES WE CARRY
I have also been thinking about the messages we give to our hearts.
Some are inherited.
Some come from the people who loved us.
Others come from those who hurt us.
Some messages remain inside us for years, repeating themselves so quietly that we eventually mistake them for our own voice.
You are not enough.
You must be strong.
You cannot stop.
You have to prove that you belong.
But we also carry words that have kept us alive.
I believe in you.
You are loved.
You can begin again.
You are not alone.
Words have roots.
They enter us, settle somewhere beneath the surface, and begin shaping how we grow.
I am learning that healing is not always about erasing the messages that wounded us. Sometimes it is about giving the heart something different to absorb.
A kinder word.
An honest memory.
A moment of forgiveness.
A sentence we were once waiting to hear from someone else, but can now offer to ourselves.
Perhaps the messages we consciously place within the heart can become nourishment for the person we are still becoming.
Perhaps what we give our attention to eventually takes root.
FROM “LOOK AT US” TO “LOOK WITHIN”
Recently, I realized something about my career that I had never articulated before.
For many years, my work seemed to say:
Look at us.
Look at our differences.
Look at our similarities.
Look at the extraordinary community we can create when we leave our marks beside one another.
Today, the invitation feels different.
It says:
Look within.
Look at what you carry.
Look at what has been broken and repaired.
Look at the parts of yourself that are still waiting to be acknowledged.
Look at the life that continues growing from places you once believed were empty.
Not because the world outside us matters less, but because I am beginning to understand that the way we meet the world is deeply connected to the way we meet ourselves.
The community is still there.
The connection is still there.
The desire to create something larger than myself is still there.
But the doorway has changed.
Before, I invited people to leave their marks upon the artwork.
Today, I want the encounter to leave a mark within them.
I want the work to be more than something we observe.
I want it to be something we enter, something we read with our own memories, something we carry with us after we walk away.
Before, I invited people into the artwork.
Today, I invite them into the heart.
MAYBE WE DON’T CHANGE. MAYBE WE GO DEEPER.
I used to think that an artist’s career moved forward by constantly becoming something new.
Now I wonder if artistic evolution sometimes works differently.
Maybe we do not abandon the questions that once defined us.
Maybe we simply go deeper into them.
When I look back at my work from ten or twenty years ago, I see an artist searching for connection.
When I look at my work today, I still see that same artist.
But now I understand something I could not have understood then:
Connection with others and connection with ourselves may be part of the same journey.
Perhaps all those years of collecting stories, hands, fingerprints, memories, and experiences were preparing me for this.
Perhaps I needed to explore the territory between people before I was ready to enter the territory within myself.
And perhaps that is why this transition does not feel like leaving my old work behind.
It feels like returning to its origin.
THE HORIZON WAS NEVER ONLY AHEAD OF ME
There is something strange about horizons.
We spend so much of our lives looking toward them.
The next opportunity.
The next relationship.
The next achievement.
The next version of ourselves.
We imagine that somewhere beyond what we can see, we will finally find the answer.
But lately, I have been learning something else.
Sometimes the horizon is not asking us to go farther.
Sometimes it is asking us to see differently.
Maybe the destination I have been searching for was never entirely somewhere ahead of me.
Maybe part of it has been beating inside me all along.
And perhaps trusting the horizon means trusting that every version of ourselves—the immigrant, the artist, the activist, the professional, the son, the brother, the friend, the dreamer, the person who has loved, lost, questioned, fallen, rebuilt, and continued—is somehow leading us toward the same place.
Home.
Not a geographical home.
Not even the home we create with other people.
The home we eventually learn to recognize within ourselves.
A home where our scars do not have to be hidden.
Where our roots are allowed to grow.
Where every part of our story can sit at the same table.
Where the heart no longer has to choose between who it was and who it is becoming.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF BEGINNING
I do not know exactly where this stage of my work will take me.
And strangely, I do not think I need to know anymore.
That may be the greatest continuation of what I wrote last week.
I am still looking toward the horizon.
I am still walking through uncertainty.
I am still following the small signs that appear when something feels aligned, even before I completely understand why.
But I am beginning to recognize the territory.
It is the same territory I have painted again and again.
The same one I have written about.
The same one I have invited others to explore.
The heart.
Maybe this is not a departure from the artist I was.
Maybe it is the artist I have always been, finally understanding the language he has been trying to speak.
For years, I believed my work was about bringing people together.
Today, I know it still is.
But before we can truly meet one another, perhaps we must first have the courage to meet ourselves.
To see what lives inside us.
To read the messages we have carried.
To honor the scars that have become part of our map.
To decide what we are ready to release—and what we want to nourish.
So I will continue walking.
I will continue painting.
I will continue writing.
I will continue asking questions.
I will continue trusting the horizon.
Only now, I understand that sometimes the most important journey forward is also a journey inward.
And perhaps, when we finally arrive at the heart, we discover that the experience was never meant to end there.
It continues through the way we love.
The way we remember.
The way we see one another.
And the way we choose to live after the encounter.
For years, I used art to connect the world. Now, I am using my heart to understand it.

Esas preguntas me formaron.
No eres suficiente.
Tienes que ser fuerte.
No puedes detenerte.
Eres amado.
Puedes comenzar de nuevo.
No estás solo.
TAL VEZ NO CAMBIAMOS. TAL VEZ PROFUNDIZAMOS.
Pero últimamente he estado aprendiendo algo diferente.
