WHEN THE HEART TRUSTS THE HORIZON

By Edwin Gil

Continuing from When the Horizon Changes

“Perhaps trust does not mean knowing where we are going. Perhaps it means finding peace while we continue walking.”

In my last reflection, When the Horizon Changes, I wrote about those moments when the landscape of our lives begins to shift.

When what once seemed certain no longer feels like the only possible direction, and almost quietly, a new horizon appears before us.

I wrote about being willing to look toward that horizon, even when we still cannot see the road that will take us there.

This week, I have found myself thinking about what happens next.

What happens when we stop simply looking at the horizon and actually begin walking toward it?

There is something profoundly beautiful about living as an artist.

But there is also something profoundly uncertain about it.

Art has always been stronger than I am.

It calls me inward.

It asks me to enter places within myself that I do not always understand and to explore them through a visual language.

Somehow, a feeling becomes a color.

A memory becomes a line.

A wound becomes a golden seam.

And what lives inside of me eventually becomes something another person can stand in front of…

look at…

and feel.

That is the part I understand.

The part I still don't always understand is:

Where is all of this taking me?

There are days when I question whether what I am doing is truly right.

There are moments when that practical voice we all carry inside becomes louder.

Where is this going?

Is this sustainable?

Am I building something real?

Or am I simply following a feeling?

And then, almost unexpectedly, clarity arrives.

Not necessarily through a sale.

Or an exhibition.

Or even recognition.

Sometimes it arrives through a message from someone telling me that one of my hearts reminded them of their own healing.

Sometimes it is someone who recognizes themselves in one of my stories.

Other times, it is an invitation.

A conversation.

A new collaboration.

Or simply someone saying:

“I understand what you are trying to say.”

These moments do not give me a map.

But they begin to feel like signs along the road.

And lately, I have wondered whether perhaps this is how we recognize that we are moving in the right direction.

Not because we can see the destination.

But because something inside of us begins to grow quiet.

There is a peace I feel when I create.

A happiness that is difficult to explain.

It is not the excitement of knowing what tomorrow will bring.

It is almost the opposite.

It is the strange tranquility of standing in completely unknown territory and, somehow, feeling that I belong there.

Perhaps that is another kind of certainty.

I think about the explorers who once sailed toward horizons they could not see beyond.

Christopher Columbus left Europe believing he could reach Asia by sailing west and instead encountered lands that Europeans on that voyage had not anticipated.

Beyond everything complicated that we now understand about the history that followed, there is something profoundly human in that image:

A person facing an immense ocean.

An incomplete map.

A horizon that refuses to reveal what lies beyond it.

And still, the conviction that there is something left to discover.

Perhaps we all carry a version of that ocean within us.

We navigate it when we search for the career we believe is ours.

We navigate it when we begin again after losing something that once defined us.

We navigate it when we follow a dream that may make little sense to everyone else.

We even navigate it when we place our heart in the hands of another person and hope that what we feel might lead us somewhere beautiful.

We are constantly searching for signs.

But perhaps the signs are not there to tell us exactly where we will arrive.

Perhaps they are simply there to remind us to keep moving.

This week, I realized that perhaps I don't need to know exactly where art is taking me.

I only need to pay attention to what happens inside of me while I create it.

And to what happens when what I create reaches someone else's heart.

The Heart Series began as a way for me to explore the territory of the human heart.

But somewhere along the way, I realized that territory was much larger than I had imagined.

Every heart has opened another conversation.

Every conversation has revealed another road.

And every road seems to lead toward another horizon.

I still don't know what waits beyond it.

But perhaps, for the first time, I am learning that not knowing does not necessarily mean being lost.

Sometimes the most meaningful validation does not arrive through applause.

Or recognition.

Or even success.

Sometimes the truest validation is the quiet peace that appears when our life and our heart begin moving in the same direction.

Maybe trust begins there.

Not when the map is complete.

Not when the destination is guaranteed.

Not when all the questions have been answered.

But when we can look toward an unknown horizon and say:

I cannot see where this road ends,

but something in my heart tells me to continue.

And perhaps, for today, that is enough.

Because maybe the horizon was never there to show us the destination.

Maybe it was simply there to teach us how to trust.

The heart already knows the way.

With gratitude,

Continuando de Cuando Cambia el Horizonte

“Tal vez confiar no significa saber hacia dónde vamos. Tal vez significa sentir paz mientras seguimos caminando.”

Me llama hacia adentro.

¿Estoy construyendo algo real?

Edwin Gil
