When the Horizon Changes
By Edwin Gil
The Spanish version of this reflection can be found at the end of this page.
“Sometimes, losing the path is the only way to discover the one that was always meant for us.”
Last week I wrote that gratitude gave me back the pen.
For the first time, I felt that I was no longer writing the story of my life from pain, fear, or survival. Gratitude had quietly rewritten the narrative of my heart.
But after publishing that reflection, another question began to surface.
If gratitude changed my story…
Where is this new story taking me?
For a long time, my life was guided by clear destinations.
Study.
Work.
Build a career.
Find love.
Build a future.
Like many of us, I was taught that life always had to move forward toward the next accomplishment. There always had to be another mountain to climb, another goal to achieve, another version of success waiting ahead.
Those goals became my compass.
Until one day…
The compass stopped working.
When the relationship that had become the center of my future came to an end, I found myself standing in a place I had never been before.
For a long time, I described that season by saying:
“Art saved my life.”
And it did.
Art gave me a language when words disappeared.
It gave shape to emotions I couldn’t explain.
It became the bridge back to myself.
But today, looking back with more perspective, I realize something even deeper.
I wasn’t simply lost.
I had entered a territory that no one had ever taught me how to navigate.
A territory without certainty.
Without expectations.
Without a map.
Without the pressure of becoming someone.
At first, it terrified me.
Because we are rarely taught how to be without knowing where we’re going.
We’re taught how to chase goals.
Not how to question them.
We’re taught how to arrive.
Not how to wander.
Yet it was precisely in that unfamiliar territory that I began meeting parts of myself I had never known.
Not the artist.
Not the professional.
Not the partner.
Simply…
Edwin.
I often think about Christopher Columbus.
History tells us he believed he was sailing toward India.
He never arrived there.
Instead, he discovered an entirely different continent.
Imagine if someone had told him he had failed simply because he didn’t reach the destination he had planned.
Sometimes life doesn’t take us where we intended to go.
Sometimes it introduces us to a place we didn’t even know existed.
That thought reminds me of one of my favorite books, The Alchemist.
Santiago crosses deserts searching for treasure, only to discover that what he had been seeking had always been much closer than he imagined.
Perhaps that is what life has been teaching me all along.
Sometimes the journey isn’t about finding something new.
It’s about becoming someone new.
For years I believed my purpose was simply to create art.
Then I believed my purpose was to heal through art.
Today…
I feel something different emerging.
Not a destination.
A direction.
The horizon has changed.
And maybe that’s exactly what life was inviting me to see.
As I continue building The Heart Movement, I’ve been reflecting on what this new compass truly looks like.
These are the five possibilities that keep returning to my heart:
1. Inspire people to explore the territory within themselves.
To remind others that their heart is a place worth discovering.
2. Build a global movement where art becomes a language of compassion.
One heart.
One story.
One person at a time.
3. Create experiences that help people reconnect with themselves and with one another.
Not by teaching art…
But by creating space for honest conversations.
4. Use creativity to remind people that vulnerability is not weakness but the birthplace of connection.
Because our scars often become the places where light enters.
5. Leave behind more than artwork.
Leave behind a movement that helps people choose empathy over fear, curiosity over judgment, and heart over division.
I don’t know if one of these is the final destination.
Maybe none of them are.
Maybe, like every meaningful journey, the horizon will continue moving.
And perhaps that is no longer something to fear.
Perhaps that is exactly what it means to be alive.
Today I no longer believe that life is asking me to have all the answers.
I believe it is asking me to keep listening.
To keep walking.
To keep drawing one heart after another.
Because every heart I draw reminds me that the greatest territory I will ever explore is not found on any map.
It lives within us.
I’d Love to Hear From You
If you’ve been following my journey through these weekly reflections, I’d love to invite you into this moment with me.
Which of these five directions do you believe best reflects where my heart is leading me now?
Or perhaps you see something I haven’t yet discovered.
Leave a comment below or send me a message.
Your perspective may become part of the next chapter of this journey.
Because perhaps we don’t discover our path alone.
Perhaps we discover it together.
One Heart at a Time.

No a cuestionarlas.
Y entonces me pregunto…
Mientras continúo construyendo The Heart Movement, me he preguntado muchas veces cuál es realmente esa nueva brújula.
No enseñando arte…
Sino creando espacios para conversaciones honestas.
A seguir caminando.
Me Encantaría Escuchar Tu Opinión
Edwin Gil
