Returning to an artistic home with a heart ready to share
By Edwin Gil | October 26, 2026
Sometimes we return to a familiar place and discover how much has changed within us.
THE NEXT LAYER
In my previous reflection, When the Pieces Reveal Who We Are, I wrote about learning to live with greater authenticity.
That question has stayed with me as I prepare The Heart Series for its opening at McColl Center on November 14.
I have been working on the pieces, making decisions, and imagining how people will encounter the work. Alongside those preparations, I have been thinking about what it means to bring these hearts into a place that has been part of my artistic life for years.
A place where I have worked, explored, and found room to keep creating.
The closer the opening gets, the more I recognize that this exhibition carries a history that began long before I painted these hearts.
WHEN SOMETHING FAMILIAR RETURNS
For a long time, I imagined life moving in circles.
A familiar fear would return, and I would wonder whether I had made any progress. An old wound would surface, and I would question what I thought I had learned.
Recently, another image came to mind: a spiral.
From certain angles, it seems to return to the same place. But each turn can bring a different perspective.
I recognize this in small moments. When I feel hurt and manage to pause before responding. When I hear an old doubt and question it before allowing it to guide my decisions.
I do not always succeed. Sometimes I react too quickly. Sometimes I have to return to a conversation and repair something I said.
The spiral is an image that helps me remember that growth requires practice. Time passes, but what I do with what I have learned matters.
As I prepare to return to McColl Center with The Heart Series, that image feels especially close.
A PLACE IN MY STORY
In 2008, I had the opportunity to experience a brief residency at McColl Center.
Over the years, my connection to this place has continued, including through my work in the Co-Lab. It has become an artistic home during my life here in Charlotte.
That word, home, carries meaning for me.
As an immigrant, I have spent much of my life exploring how we build belonging while carrying memories of somewhere else. Art has given me a way to express that experience and form connections in the place where I live.
McColl Center belongs to that story.
Returning now, with a series centered on roots, voice, identity, healing, and belonging, allows me to see that relationship differently. The questions inside these hearts have been accompanying me for years.
On November 14, I will have the honor of sharing this new chapter as part of McColl Center’s celebration.
I feel grateful to bring this work into a place that has helped me continue developing it—and myself.
WHAT I AM BRINGING WITH ME
As the opening approaches, I still experience uncertainty.
There are old messages about my worth that sometimes return when I am about to take an important step. I am learning to recognize them without treating them as facts.
An exhibition matters deeply to me. But I want to experience it without asking it to settle every doubt I have ever carried.
I want to be present.
To speak honestly about the work. To listen. To enjoy seeing someone pause in front of a heart and discover something I could not have anticipated.
That is part of what I hope to share through The Heart Series: room to encounter ourselves with curiosity.
A heart can hold a memory, a question, a color that feels familiar. It can open a conversation we did not know we needed.
FROM THE STUDIO INTO THE CITY
The Heart Series began in the studio, through a process of building layers and discovering what each piece was asking of me.
On November 14, its public journey begins at McColl Center.
The developing itinerary includes CPCC, Mint Museum, and other places across Charlotte, with a return to McColl Center planned for September 2027.
Along the way, I am working toward collaborations with other artists, new encounters between art and community, and experiences I will share as they take shape.
I want to leave space for what those exchanges may bring.
Each place will have its own context. Each conversation may reveal another way of understanding the work. I am curious about how these hearts will change through the stories people bring to them.
The work will travel, and I will keep learning alongside it.
AN INVITATION TO BEGIN TOGETHER
Perhaps you have also returned to a familiar place and noticed that you experienced it differently.
Perhaps an old fear has appeared, and this time you have found a little more room to choose your response.
What have you learned since the last time you were there?
That is a question I am carrying into this exhibition.
I would love for you to join me for the opening of The Heart Series at McColl Center on November 14, 2026, from 2 to 6 p.m.
Come spend time with the work. Bring your questions and whatever part of your story you feel like carrying into the room.
For me, this beginning holds years of creating, searching, and building a life in Charlotte.
Returning to this artistic home, I can recognize some of those earlier versions of myself.
And I am ready to share what has been growing since.

A veces reacciono demasiado rápido.
Edwin Gil
