The Heart of the Sun
Inspired by Cándido Bidó | Dominican Republic
From The Heart of Our Heritage – The Territory of Identity
At the center of this work, a vibrant blue anatomical heart emerges within a luminous Caribbean landscape filled with human figures, tropical vegetation, birds, architecture, and the warmth of an ever-present sun. The composition celebrates identity through color, community, nature, and the rhythms of everyday life.
The intense blue heart represents depth, memory, and emotional connection, while the golden sun becomes a symbol of vitality, continuity, and the light we inherit from the places that shape us. The surrounding women evoke family, strength, and generations of stories carried forward, while the tropical landscape connects identity to home and a sense of place.
Here, heritage is not presented only as something from the past. It is alive—in the people we remember, the colors that surround us, the traditions we preserve, and the communities to which we belong.
Part of Edwin Gil’s The Heart of Our Heritage, this piece continues his exploration of the heart as a territory where culture, community, memory, joy, and belonging come together.
