The Heart of Manolo’s Bakery celebrates the connection between food, culture, memory, and belonging.
A bakery is more than a place where food is made. It is a place where traditions are preserved, memories are awakened, and the familiar flavors of home bring people together.
For immigrant communities especially, food carries a profound emotional connection. A familiar taste can transport us to a family table, a childhood celebration, a country we left behind, or a moment we thought we had forgotten.
Through this artwork, the anatomical heart becomes a symbol of those invisible connections—the flavors we remember, the traditions we carry, and the experiences that shape our sense of identity and belonging.
Inspired by The Territory of Belonging within Edwin Gil’s The Heart Series, this Community Heart celebrates Manolo’s Bakery as a place where food becomes a bridge between cultures, generations, and communities.
It also reflects the idea behind “Flavors That Nourish the Heart”—because sometimes belonging begins with something as simple as a familiar taste.
Created as part of Gil Project’s Community Hearts initiative, this artwork honors the role Manolo’s Bakery plays in bringing people together through food, culture, and shared experiences.

A limited edition of 100 authorized reproductions is available to collectors and community supporters. 50% of eligible reproduction sales supports a nonprofit organization selected by Manolo’s Bakery, transforming each purchase into an opportunity to give back.
