SWEET HOME – Community Mural and Supporting Documentary
The Project involves the drawing of a mural and shooting of a supporting video
documentary based on the most memorable images of their country of origin and
current life in Charlotte, shared by Latinos.
The contents of the mural will be the pictorial representation of the
experiences shared by people of all ages from the Latino Community of Charlotte.
This includes nationals of other countries, Americans of Hispanic origin and
Americans that have strong links with the Latino Community.
The documentary will capture the making of the mural and the images of the
members of the community behind the creation of such important representation of
Popular Art.
The Mural will be located in a representative section of the Central
Avenue/Albemarle Road corridor of East Charlotte. This location will be a high
traffic location where local residents and commuters can see and enjoy.
The participant community will define the mural contents. Edwin Gil, renowned
local artist, will be the person in charge of drawing the mural and represent
closely the images and feelings shared by the participants. Catalina Echeverry,
local film and documentary producer, will be in charge of the production,
shooting and editing of the supporting documentary.
Both, Edwin Gil and Catalina Echeverry are active members of the Charlotte
Hispanic Community. They have demonstrated through their actions and profession,
their commitment to the City of Charlotte and its people.
Some of the projects where Edwin has played a leading role include: The annual
event “Con “A” de Arte”, co-sponsored by the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library; the
Restoration of Eugene Montgomery’s Mural in the South Meck School. The
Exposition of Charlotte Virgin of Guadalupe Event. The creation of Arts United,
a local non-profit organization that promotes artistic
expression in Charlotte.
Catalina has actively contributed to projects that
include: The Production and Direction of the TV Show “Caminando en las
Carolinas” in 2003 and 2004. The Organization of the 2006 and 2007 Charlotte
